Catalogue No.6, July 2022: The Blue Mountains

Here in the 'Mountains we love to write about ourselves. The scenery is so dramatic, the lifestyle so heady, the history so rich that we have literally spilled rivers of ink writing about it. Much of what was written was never meant to last and there are many ephemeral treasures to be found concerning the region, along with lots of other more permanent things. Consequently, there is a rather intense competition among collectors of Blue Mountains material. In this catalogue there are lots of items to do with the history and ecology of the place, along with books inspired by the locale. If there is anything here that you would like to know more about, contact us at moroccobooks1000@gmail.com.

Jenolan Caves:

Since they were first discovered, the Jenolan caves complex has been a drawcard and an endless source of fascination for tourists and locals alike. Many publications have been written about the place, trying to capitalise on the rugged beauty of the area, many with a view to turning the odd tourist dollar. Interestingly, it wasn't until 1975 that a master plan to oversee the development of the locale was generated and (mostly) put into place

(75203) Frank Hurley (illus.), The Blue Mountains and Jenolan Caves in natural colour, John Sands Pty. Ltd., np., nd. (1950s).

Landscape quarto; paperback, spiral-bound booklet; 212pp., printed on one side only, with many monochrome diagrams and illustrations. Mild wear; covers rubbed and edgeworn; previous owner's name in ink to the front cover; some light scattered foxing throughout; a couple of emendations in ink within the text. Very good.

This master plan to oversee the development and maintenance of the Jenolan Caves district was only drawn up in 1975 and, while many of its proposals have fallen by the wayside, it forms the bedrock for the running of the area to this day. At one time copies were only able to be purchased by writing to a private address in Canberra; nowadays they are rare as hens' teeth. This one was bought by a concerned local who made several unobtrusive notations to the text as part of their involvement with the region.

Bushwalking, Cycling & Other Tourist Guides:

Walking tracks in the Blue Mountains came into their own during the 1930s when many people came up here from the cities to address issues of health. The region was thought to be restful and beneficial for those with respiratory ailments; a focus of the regimens that sought to cure these folk was the exercise benefits of bushwalking. Most of the tracks that were established for this purpose (many of which had been marked out by the earliest settlers in the region) were placed into the oversight of dedicated individuals who saw to their maintenance and upkeep. These guardians often kept up their duties well into their sunset years before handing over the responsibility to younger hands. In this way, a tradition of bush care has developed which is likely unique to the region.

Local Authors and Books set in the Blue Mountains

The environment of the Blue Mountains allows writers to give free rein their imaginations, either inspiring them to create locally-set stories or simply allowing them the time to put words to page for their chosen narratives. Eleanor Dark was on such productive author and her 'Mountains home  - Varuna - these days is a workshop and resource for budding writers. Other notable wordsmiths who lived or wrote here include Eve Langley, Delia Falconer, Kylie Tennant, Kit Denton and Richard Neville - as their works come into stock here at Morocco Books and Collectibles, we will add them below.

(68074) Colleen McCullough (Peter Chapman, illus.), The Ladies of Missalonghi, Avon Books/The Hearst Corporation, New York, USA 1988.

Octavo; paperback; 189pp., with many monochrome illustrations. Mild wear; covers a little rubbed and edgeworn; text block and page edges toned. Very good.

A gentle comedy of manners set in the Blue Mountains during the Edwardian era, this book contains all the delicate psychological insight which is a hallmark of McCullough's work at its best.

$6

(76656) Kate Llewellyn, The Waterlily - A Blue Mountains Journal, Hudson Publishing/N.S. Publishing Services Pty. Ltd., Hawthorn Vic., 1987.

Reprint: octavo; hardcover, with gilt spine titles; 192pp. Mild wear; text block top edge dusted. Dustwrapper a little rubbed; a small tear to the top of the lower flap-turn. Very good.

$25

(75600) Catherine Jinks, The Inquisitor - A Novel St Martin's Minotaur, New York NY, 2002.

Octavo; hardcover, with metallic-red spine titles; 393pp. Minor wear. Dustwrapper now professionally protected by non-adhesive polypropylene film. Near fine.

$20

76159) Frank Walford, Twisted Clay, Remains Books/Salt Publishing Ltd., Cromer Norfolk UK, 2014.

Octavo; paperback; 270pp., with monochrome decorations. Mild wear. Very good.

Frank Walford, one-time lord mayor of Katoomba, wrote this novel while he and the Darks were engaging with the psychological writings of Havelock Ellis in their homegrown writing group. Eleanor Dark felt that Walford's novel was too similar to her own work - Prelude to Christopher - with the result that the two suffered an irreparable falling-out. This turgid psychological horror story, set in the bosky wilds of Katoomba, was banned in Australia upon release, but sold like hotcakes in the US; it still has the power to disturb these days.

$25

(71848) Daniel Jeudy, Sons of Brutality, Vivid Publishing, Fremantle WA, 2021.

Octavo; paperback; 338pp. Minor wear. New.

A hard-hitting supernatural crime novel set in Los Angeles in the modern era. With sadistic bad guys and questionable police officers in pursuit, this is a novel definitely not for the faint-hearted.
