The journal of the "Five Days'
Peregrination", which Hogarth and a party of his friends composed on their
return from a trip to the coast of Kent in 1732, was a rollicking impromptu,
never meant for publication. No other contemporary record gives so lively a
picture of the artist and the company he kept. This new edition for the first
time faithfully prints the text of the manuscript, now in the British Museum,
and it reproduces the drawings of Hogarth, Samuel Scott, and John Thornhill,
Hogarth's brother-in-law, from newly made photographs; the book also includes a
reprint of William Gostling's account of the tour in Hudibrastic verse. The
Introductory essay is an attempt to set the manuscript in its original context:
the editor draws biographical sketches of the travellers and defines their
journal as a burlesque on antiquaries, to which Hogarth made satirical additions
which throw fresh light on his state of mind at the time he launched the "Harlot's
Progress".
