Napoleonics

(68833) Ugo Pericoli (with Michael Glover; A.S.W. Winkworth, trans.; Introduction by Elizabeth Longford), 1815 – The Armies at Waterloo, Seeley Service & Company, London, 1979.

Reprint: royal octavo; hardcover, with gilt spine titles and decorative endpapers; 176pp., with 80pp. of colour plates and many monochrome illustrations. (69346) Edward Ryan (Lucien Rousselot, illus.), Napoleon's Elite Cavalry - Cavalry of the Imperial Guard, 1804-1815; The Paintings of Lucien Rousselot, Greenhill Books Ltd., London, 1999.

First edition: folio; hardcover, with gilt spine titling; 208pp, with many colour illustrations. Minor wear; a slight bump to the bottom edge of the upper board. Dustwrapper lightly rubbed. Very good.

Rousselot was the Angus McBride of his day (and if that means nothing to you, you haven't done enough miniatures wargaming!). He spent a long time cataloguing and illustrating the various uniforms of Napoleon's armies - often from surviving examples - and was able to attain a very high standard of portrayal. He published his first collection in 1943 to wide acclaim. The cavalry plates were gathered together for this new edition by Greenhill Books - noted publishers of Napoleonic material and other militaria - and each image annotated by Edward Ryan, an expert on the myriad military uniforms of the period. If you've ever watched episodes of "Sharpe" and wondered what all those funny hats were called, or pondered the changing fashion parade that is Ridley Scott's "The Duellists", then this book is quintessential.

$100

Australian Unit Histories:

Unit histories are an odd phenomenon. They are produced on subscription to the members of the unit which they cover and so are created in fairly limited numbers; they contain all the history concerning the unit, along with some personal material which might seem odd, or make no sense, to outsiders; and they represent touchstones to family members who have passed on. Sometimes these books are the only source for family members to discover what their military relatives got up to during the wars they fought. As collectibles therefore, they speak to very particular audiences and are generally overlooked; but they are often the only surviving ‘boots on the ground’ records of many major military engagements.

Ephemera

Several of the items in this grouping would seem to be anything but ephemeral; however, they do fit the description in that they were designed and created as promotional items and were made in limited numbers sent out to subscribers, or to a specific audience. The ANZAC Book was published as a fund raiser to help troops in the field, while Australian Chivalry was issued as a fundraiser to help finance the creation of an Australian war memorial, ultimately built in Canberra. Stand Easy was created as a celebration of wartime victory and in order to raise funds for returning soldiers. Regardless of their categorisation, these items are long-time survivors and getting increasingly rare.

Military Memoirs

In the aftermath of World War Two and into the ensuing Cold War, stories of wartime derring-do became mainstays of the publishing world. Publishers like Pan Books, New English Library, Fontana and others released small format editions of these biographical narratives for an eager readership - easy to read and able to be slipped into a pocket. Some of these titles were official histories bought as reprints and sometimes they were the remembrances of enemy fighters - published for the first time and only available in these sub rosa formats.
