Catalogue No.8, July 2022 - Cricket

It's the sacred game; the secret (and not-so-secret) obsession; it's the world game that isn't football (i.e. soccer). For half the world, it's tantamount to religion; to the rest it's a bewildering pastime that looks like afternoon tea dressed up as a sport. Whatever you feel about the sound of willow on leather, it's undeniable that a lot of books get published about it. Here at Morocco Books and Collectibles, we have amassed quite the selection, so if cricket is your thing - or if you know someone whose thing it is - take a look at the following range (and contact us at moroccobooks1000@gmail.com if there's anything you need to know more about).

It's highly unlikely that Homer would have seen a game of cricket but, if he had, he might nave been moved to write the piece attributed to him within these covers. Herein are witty cricket tales and paeans to the game, penned in the style of the great writers: parody writing at its best!

Slow bowlers have brought to cricket a charm, a mystery, and an excitement that are not part of the other departments of the game. Back in 1932, there wasn't a TV network pumping out every swish of leather and thwack of willow - at that time, reportage was done by a guy, field side in a hat, with a pair of binoculars and a notepad, painstakingly recording each and every over. There's probably a few radio recordings of this Test lying around somewhere, but with this book you could read your way through the entire 1932 Ashes test and feel like you had time-travelled there for each innings.

The journal of the "Five Days' Peregrination", which Hogarth and a party of his friends composed on their return from a trip to the coast of Kent in 1732, was a rollicking impromptu, never meant for publication. No other contemporary record gives so lively a picture of the artist and the company he kept. This new edition for the first time faithfully prints the text of the manuscript, now in the British Museum, and it reproduces the drawings of Hogarth, Samuel Scott, and John Thornhill, Hogarth's brother-in-law, from newly made photographs; the book also includes a reprint of William Gostling's account of the tour in Hudibrastic verse. The Introductory essay is an attempt to set the manuscript in its original context: the editor draws biographical sketches of the travellers and defines their journal as a burlesque on antiquaries, to which Hogarth made satirical additions which throw fresh light on his state of mind at the time he launched the "Harlot's Progress".
